Dear Committee Members:

This is a request for a commemorative United States Postage Stamp in honor of the late entertainer and humanitarian Bobby Darin (1936-1973).

Mr. Darin is widely respected for being a multi-talented, versatile performer, who challenged and successfully conquered many music genres, including, folk, country, pop, rock and jazz. He was also an accomplished, award-winning actor, and a music business entrepreneur.

Mr. Darin was born to a poor, working-class family in the Harlem area of New York City. He was frail as an infant and between the ages of 8 and 12 he was stricken with rheumatic fever that left him with a seriously diseased heart. He lived with the knowledge that his life would be a short one.

With an internal drive that helped him overcome a life of poverty and illness and an innate talent for rhythm and music, he taught himself to play several instruments as well as to sing and perform. He also wrote over 170 songs and recorded over 400 songs. All his hard work paid off. Bobby Darin reached the upper echelons of the entertainment industry and at one time was both the youngest and the highest paid performer in Las Vegas. He was invited to perform for royalty and presidents. Mr. Darin was recognized by his peers as a fine artist, a masterful performer, and a major influence on the American entertainment industry.

Little known, too, is his compassion and concern for his fellow Americans. He became a staunch civil rights supporter, and he hit the campaign trail for his hero Bobby Kennedy. Also, he hosted a special television program titled "A Matter of Time" that explored the uniquely human experience of terminal illness.

Against all odds, he realized the American dream, and achieved the following honors:

His important life lesson is relevant to everyone and he is a wonderful role model for American youth. Please consider honoring this amazing human being and entertainer for his extraordinary achievements with a commemorative United States Postage Stamp.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
